Human Variation and Race Blog

Heat is an environmental stress that negatively impacts the survival of humans by disturbing homeostasis. Heat can bring about heat rashes, heat exhaustion, and/or even heatstroke. Heat rashes occur when sweat glands in the skin become clogged causing the sweat to leak into the surrounding tissue and in turn causing irritation and redness. Heat exhaustion occurs when you’ve been exposed to high temperatures for several days and have become dehydrated, not allowing your body to cool down as is necessary. Heatstroke is caused by doing intense, high energy activities under the sun or by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. An individual is considered to be suffering a heatstroke when their body temperature has reached and exceeded 104 F.
A short term adaptation for heat is sweating. Sweating helps regulate our body's temperature by allowing heat loss through evaporation, its the body's way of cooling itself down. It is very important to replace the electrolytes we loose when we sweat by drinking lots of water.


      A facultative adaptation to heat is skin tone. A person with a darker skin tone will absorb the heat and feel hotter than a person with a lighter skin tone, who is able to reflect the heat and not feel as hot. This is why most people choose to wear light colored clothing and breathable fabrics such as cottons, linens and silk in the hot months, to help feel cool.




        A developmental adaptation to the heat would be bipedalism. Walking upright on only two feet allows us to have less surface area touching a hot surface, which in turn helps keep us cool. Less of our body touching a hot surface, cooler we will feel. Another benefit of bipedalism is that since we are now upright, or bodies and skin are more in contact with the surrounding breezes, also helping in cooling us down.


      
      A cultural adaptation to heat would be electrical fans and air conditioning. Air conditioning is the greatest invention! It can turn a hot room or space cool in a matter of minutes and control the temperature allowing us to remain comfortable. Fans can be turned on when air conditioning is not an option or available and help us stay cool. Another cultural adaptation would be the use of clothing. The use of clothing assists in reflecting the heat and keeping our bodies cool.


      The benefit of studying heat on human variation is that it allows us to figure out how to adapt to it and live with it. We learn to either avoid the heat, love the heat, or just find ways to tolerate it and keep comfortable. Information can be useful because we are able to learn different options and techniques that can assist in us staying cool when being out in the heat is necessary. For example, lets say we must be out in the hot sun for a sports related activity. We know that wearing cool clothing, wearing a hat, or holding an umbrella will help beat the heat a bit. 

     I don't think race can really determine how we adapt to heat. The heat doesn't choose who it wants to target and just heat those people, it is all over. We are all affected, no matter your race or color.

Language Blog

I found last week's assignment of engaging into a conversation with someone without speaking, interesting, but frustrating. I found that I would get so frustrated with my partner not being able to understand me, that I would catch myself breaking my silence at times and really wanting to give up. I eventually, somewhat got the hang of it and began to only use my hands and body language to communicate. It was interesting how it took a longer time than usual to get just a simple idea across. I felt like I was playing charades, and I was just terrible at it!  My partner was also getting very frustrated and wanted to quit. We stuck it out though and tried as best we could. Once the time was up though, it was very funny to talk to my partner and learn that we both misinterpreted what the other was saying. Overall, it was an interesting situation. Most of the time, I think I was in control of the conversation even if I couldn't speak. I say so because I wouldn't allow the conversation to continue unless he would understand what I was saying, or got close to it. My partner would ask to change the topic to something "easier" he would say, in hopes that he would be able to understand that. I chose not to include more than one person in this experiment because I thought it would only add on to the difficulty and make it nearly impossible to carry a conversation with multiple people chiming in on what I was trying to say. In this case, I think that although I was in control, my lack of language, made ME powerless. I say this because I couldn't make my point, there was only so much I could say without actually saying it! Meanwhile, my partner was happily chatting it up, no problem! :/ 

I think that the culture that can actually speak has the advantage hands down. I think so because with speaking we can say whats on our mind, our thoughts, ideas, etc. with no problem and in a short amount of time. However, in using only your body and hands to say something, you will eventually be able to, but it will take much longer. That is of course, if they don't give up first. 

For the second part of the assignment, I actually found it much easier. I don't usually use my hands while speaking, so  it wasn't too difficult. I did, however, cheat a little and sit on my hands at the beginning of the conversation to insure I wouldn't use them. My brother, who was my partner in this assignment said he didn't find it difficult to understand me, but he did find it funny that I was sitting on my hands. 
To me, what I think this says is that, unless you cannot speak because of an unfortunate handicap, its not something you find too necessary in order to get your point across. I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference, unless its your only option. However, I do think signs are important. I feel like they add meaning and emphasize a point trying to be made. I think that they also add more feeling to what is being said, in that you can actually act out what you are saying.

Being able to read a person's body language is a plus. I think it is an advantage because it can help interpret what is being said in either a more positive or negative way. I know that when I am speaking to my husband and saying something to him, he reacts according to my body language and whether I am coming at him in a aggressive or calm manner. One of the times where you wouldn't want to read or interpret body language is when you are meeting someone for the first time. I say so because, you want to be nice and personable and reading a person's body language can be misleading and misread, it can make you pass judgement on a person without really getting to know them first. You may think the person is rude or undesirable, when in fact they are not.

Piltdown Hoax Blog


The Piltdown Hoax

The Piltdown Hoax was a hoax produced by two amateur archaeologists by the names of Charles Dawson and Arthur Smith Woodward. In December of 1912, these two men went before a crammed meeting of the U.K.’s Geological Society and presented their findings of a three year excavation they had concluded of the Piltdown gravel pit in Sussex, England. Dawson claimed to have unearthed human like skull fragments, a jaw with two teeth, a variety of animal fossils, and some prehistoric stone tools. At this meeting, Dawson and Woodward announced that the skull and jaw bones belong to the same person, a primitive hominid who’d lived between 500,000 -1 million years ago. The English scientific community welcomed these findings with open arms, as they to finally had proof that they also had prehistoric human-ape-like fossils in their land. They accepted these findings as the connection between ape and prehistoric man, and as the confirmation that Darwin’s theory of evolution was true. However, in the 1920’s and 30’s the doubts of the legitimacy of Piltdown man began to arise with the discovery of other early human remains around the world like, the Taung skull in South Africa. None of these remains showed the large brain and ape-like jaw of Piltdown Man; instead, they suggested that jaws and teeth became human-like before a large brain evolved. Upon further research in 1953, it turned out that Piltdown man was a fake, and not at all what was first believed (Dawson could not be questioned about these new findings, for he died in 1916). There was actually no connection between man and ape as was first thought. The skull and jaw were to big to belong to a human; it was a mixture of human and ape skull bones. The teeth had been filed down to look more humanlike and the skull was actually much more younger that was originally believed, it was actually no more the 600 years old. Furthermore, a microscope revealed that many of the remains from the Piltdown site appeared to have been stained to match each other as well as the gravel where they were supposedly found, this finding surfaced in 1996, when an old trunk found in storage at the British Museum was found to contain fossils that had been stained in the same manner as the Piltdown remains. It was never really known who is responsible for the hoax, but most evidence points to Dawson who was hoping to gain acceptance into various scientific circles, as well as being inducted into the Royal Society. In the end, the only thing he achieved was to infamously be known as the greatest fraud of scientific history.

In this case we see how desperation played a big role in what happened, how the findings were accepted without really being studied by real scientists, as well as more skillful, seasoned and better trained archaeologists, and aftermath of it all. England was desperate to prove that man’s origin came from Britain by claiming the findings could be those of the oldest human-ape and that they were found on their land. Dawson was so desperate to be socially accepted that he went to great lengths in doing so, not caring what would happen if the truth came to light. In the end, it was this desperation and lack of judgement that caused everyone their good name.

The positive aspects here were that the modern scientists with their more modern techniques were able to authenticate the skull fragments to prove whether or not they were in fact what was first claimed. They used techniques that at the time were the most up to date, that consisted of the use of fluorine to determine the age of the skull fragments by timing the duration of how long the object would absorb the fluorine and chemicals that were able to show the artificial stains in the skull. They also used more advanced microscopes in analyzing the teeth and jaw.

In today’s day and age it is indeed very possible to remove the “human” factor from science to prevent something like this happening again because of how advanced we now are in science as well as in technology. I think it would be very hard to let a fake ANYTHING pass for the authentic thing without it first being scientifically proven otherwise. If we have learned anything from this, it is to check, re-check and check again. Things are not always what they appear.

The life lesson here is not to take things for face value and to check things no matter how rushed we may be or how great we may came out of it. Its in these times, after a second look, that we are able to catch our errors and fix things to make them better.

The Lemur monkey is native to, and lives in the African islands of Madagascar and Comoro. Lemurs are mammals, with an average life span of 18 years. They are about the size of a standard house cat and weight between 5 to 7.5 lbs. Lemurs spend a lot of their time on the ground, which is unusual for the species, looking for fruit. Fruit is essential and makes up a major part of the Lemur diet, apart from, leaves, flowers, tree bark, and sap. Omnivore Lemurs, like the mouse Lemur, eat insects, bird eggs, lizards, and plants. Lemurs have powerful scent glands, they use their odor to communicate with one another and as a weapon to mark their territories from other animals.



b. Though all primates are climbers, some of them have developed a more specialized adaptation to other kinds of movement, or locomotion. This is in order for the primates to better adapt to their environment. Some are good at moving on the ground (terrestrially), and others are good at climbing and swinging. Lemur monkeys use their hands and feet to move through the trees (but cannot grip with their tails as some of the other primates do) and their tails for balance. Lemurs use a locomotion called vertical clinging and leaping, this enables them to leap between vertical supports, such as small tree trunks and bamboo. Large lemurs, leap along the ground. Their legs are relatively long compared to their arms, so that ground movement can be more effective by leaping than by running on all fours.

c. Lemurs use a combination of quadrupedalism (knuckle walking) and brachiation (arm swinging, using only their arm strength). Lemurs are able to rush headlong from branch to branch, because of their arboreal skills. They are able to cover large amounts of land by leaping from one tree to another, limited only by gravity. Their legs are relatively long compared to their arms, so that terrestrial movement can be more effective by leaping than by running on all fours.



Spider monkeys live in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America and can also be found as far North as Mexico. The life span of a spider monkey is about 22 years, out in the wild. They weigh about 13.5 lbs and measure between 14-26 inches. Spider monkeys spend most of their time up on the treetops, where they find most of their food. A Spider monkey’s diet consists mainly of nuts, fruits, leaves, bird eggs, and spiders. This type of primate is avery noisy animal and often communicates with many different calls such as screeches, barks, and other sounds.




b. Spider monkeys have long, lanky arms and prehensile tails with a very strong grip that enables them to move gracefully from branch to branch and tree to tree. They are able to maintain a powerful grip on branches even though they have no thumbs. This monkey has shown a type of locomotion that contains the elements of both quadrupedalism and brachiation. Their elongated arms allow them to move in a specialized manner through the trees using a hand-over-hand motion, and walking upright when walking down on the ground. In addition to their long arms, spider monkeys have hook-like hands with elongated fingers which allow them to swing over branches with ease.

c. Not similar to most other primates, spider monkeys lack an external thumb. The abbreviated thumb is really a specialized adaptation; their ancestor had an opposing thumb, but over time, it has shrunk in size in proportion to other bones of the hand due to lack of use in their arboreal environment. Another adaptation seen in spider monkeys is their long, specialized tail. This tail allows them to move through the treetops with additional ease, security, and efficiency. On the underside of the tip of the tail there is a patch of skin with distinct pattern of lines. This patch of skin, at the tip is important because it helps the tail grip onto surfaces, much like fingers on a hand. Furthermore, the presence of a prehensile tail is important in suspensory feeding: the tail supports the entire weight of the monkey while both hands are free to feed.


     

         Although there are five different species of baboons, all of them live in Africa or Arabia. The average life span of a baboon in the wild is 30 years. Baboons are some of the world's largest monkeys, and males average from 33 to 82 pounds. Baboon bodies are 20 to 40 inches long, not including tails, which vary in length. They generally prefer savannas and other semi-dry habitats, though a few live in tropical forests. They spend most of their time on the ground. The baboon diet consists of fruits, grasses, seeds, bark, and roots, but also have a taste for meat. They also like to eat birds, rodents, and even the young of antelopes and sheep. Baboons use at least ten different and unique vocalizations to communicate with one another.



b. Baboon monkeys are terrestrial monkeys, meaning that they spend most of their time on the ground. Therefore, they are known to use quadrupedalism as a form of locomotion. They also walk with their toes, also know as digits, but with their heels not touching the ground. This is called digitigrade quadrupedalism. Like other monkeys, baboons do not have prehensile (gripping) tails. But they can and do climb trees to sleep, eat, or look out for trouble.

c. Baboons have more big toe mobility for grasping and climbing. Baboons have ischial callosities, or hairless rump pads, which represent adaptations for extended periods of sitting or lying on rough branches, rocks and the ground. They have adapted their locomotor skills of quadrupedalism to their environment because a baboon doesn't have a prehensile tail to use as an extra limb and to assist it in hanging from trees. It mainly relies on its hands and feet for grabbing, holding, touching and moving.




         Gibbon monkeys are endemic to the dense forests of southern Asia. The life span of a Gibbon monkey is 25 years in the wild. They weigh between 9 to 29 lbs, and are between 17 to 25 inches long. These primates live mainly on the treetops. Gibbons thrive on fruit trees in their tropical habitats, and especially love figs. They will occasionally supplement their diet with leaves and insects. Gibbons communicate by using loud calls that can echo for miles throughout the forest. They are also known to sing. Some Gibbons have even adapted large throat pouches to amplify their calls.



b. Gibbon monkeys have strong, hook-shaped hands for grasping branches, long arms for reaching faraway limbs, and long, powerful legs for propelling and gasping. Their shoulder joints are even specially adapted to allow greater range of motion when swinging. Their form of locomotion is called brachiation. Brachiation can move gibbons through the jungle at up to 35 miles an hour, and covering gaps as wide as 50 feet with a single swinging leap. Brachiating also gives gibbons the unique advantage of being able to swing out and grab fruits growing at the end of branches.

c. The Gibbons environment has influenced its locomotor skills by enabling them to use their long arms, strong shoulders and lightweight body to travel, eat, and move amongst the treetops easier. When on the ground, they have the ability to walk upright,  rather than on all fours like other monkeys.




         Chimpanzees live in large communities of several dozen animals, and are habitual to African rain forests, woodlands, and grasslands. The average life span of a Chimp is 45 years in the wild. They are between 4 to 5.5 feet tall and weigh between 70 to 130 lbs. Chimpanzees usually sleep in trees, making nests of leaves. are mainly fruit and plant eaters, but they also consume insects, eggs, and meat. They have a varied diet that includes hundreds of known foods. Chimps communicate vocally, not verbally. This means they make noises to communicate, not words.



b. Although they normally walk on all fours (knuckle-walking) and fist walking, chimpanzees can stand and walk upright. By swinging from branch to branch they can also move quite efficiently in the trees, where they do most of their eating. These apes have long forelimbs relative to their hindlimbs, and their hands are very long with strong tendons for curling the long fingers into a powerful hook. These hands are very well adapted to suspension in the trees, but they are not capable of being extended with the palms toward the ground, which is the way most other primates walk quadrupedally. So instead of walking palm-down, they use their knuckles.

c. A few features of living chimpanzees and gorillas appear to be adaptations to knuckle-walking. Because the arms are held in a locked position while supporting the body, the end of the ulna is more U-shaped, built for supporting the humerus from below. Also, the joints of the hands are more limited in motion, and incapable of being extended backward at the wrist and knuckles. These are the main adaptations the Chimpanzee’s locomotor skills has made to its environment.


        I think that the environment that each of these primates live in play a significant role in their adaptation to it. As we can see here, even though they are all primates, they are are all very different and need to be, because of where they live and how they live. Some need to be smaller and faster in order to survive from being attacked from larger predators, as is the case of the lemurs, spider and gibbon monkeys, were others need only to be stronger, like the baboon and the chimp. They make the best of what they have been given by nature in order to survive in the wild.

Analogy/Homology Post

HOMOLOGS

1. Two different species I found that possess the homologus trait are the frog and the lizard. A frog is a tailless amphibian with a squat body, and the lizard is a reptile with a long body and tail. According to the website dictionary.com in the article entitled Homology in the Animal Kingdom, last accessed on February 2015, it states, "Though they clearly look different, they both share the same common ancestor and a common set of bones (the radius, ulna, humerus)".













b. The trait these two animals have in common are their forelimbs. The forelimbs of a frog and a lizard look very different because they have evolved differently to assist in the specific lifestyles of each animal. The forelimbs of a frog consist of a humerus, radioulna, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges; where a lizards forelimbs consist of a humerus, ulna, radius, radiale, centrales, metacarpals and distalia. The frog uses its hind forelimbs for swimming and leaping, and its smaller, upper limbs for steering when it is swimming and for absorption of shock when landing after a jump. The lizard uses its forelimbs for running, balancing, gripping and for holding on to things. The traits are different because it is necessary in order for the animal to survive in its environment. The frog is a water animal, where the lizard lives mainly on land.



c.The common ancestor they share is called Eusthenopteron, a now extinct Devonian lobe-finned fish that lived 385 million years ago. We know that Eusthenopteron possessed this trait because of fossils that have been found and studied, indicating that this animal also had a humerus, ulna, and radius.
(See photo above) Though Eusthenopteron was a fish, it sometimes came up on land to search for food when none was found on the ocean floor.

ANALOGS

1. Two species that I found to possess the analogous trait are the Platypus and Duck. Contrary to what some people may think, they are not, both birds. One is a bird, and the other is a mammal. Both however, do lay eggs.

b. As previously stated, they are both egg laying creatures that have webbed feet, and a soft, smooth rubbery snout. A platypus lays one to two eggs at a time and keeps them warm by holding them between her body and tail. The eggs hatch in about ten days. On the other hand, a duck can lay between 9 to 12 eggs at a time (depending on the type of duck), which it buries in a nest till they are ready to hatch about 28 days later. 

c. I do believe the common ancestor in both could have shared this trait because otherwise, I don't think a platypus would be able to lay eggs if it is a mammal, I don't see the point to it. Why not instead just give birth to its babies like other mammals? I think we know it is an analogous trait because its clear that they are not alike, aside from the snout they both possess and the fact that they both lay eggs, they look and are nothing alike. I think the platypus looks more like a mixture of a seal and a beaver.

Who Said It Best to Charles Darwin

Upon reading up on all five of the individuals who influenced Darwin in one way or another, I believe that the one who was most influential to him and his work was Alfred Russell Wallace. (It has also been said that Wallace was the one who originally came up with the theory of Natural Selection and Darwin took credit for the work). In the Encyclopedia Britannica's website article entitled "Alfred Russell Wallace: The Career of a Naturalist" last accessed on February 2015, it says that Wallace co-wrote an article with Darwin called "On the Tendency of Species to Form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Selection", which was both of their theories combined into one. Wallace believed that species arise by outliving the parent species in the struggle to survive. In the same article, it states: "Every species has come into existence coincident both in space and time with a pre-existing closely allied species.... New species arise by the progression and continued divergence of varieties that outlive the parent species in the struggle for existence". In other words, what this means is that although species evolve and change with time as was Darwin's argument in his theory, only the strongest evolve and survive, but still have a bit of the genes/organisms of the original species. Wallace believed that animals and the animal population would increase or change based on the environment that they were in. They needed to grow or mutate in order to adapt to their changing environment, but would not do so if the environment was the same; it was not necessary. As we can clearly see, Wallaces' work was very influential to Darwin, being as how we see the similarities in Darwin's work. In Darwin's theory, we can see Wallaces' beliefs at play, Darwin believed in Common Descent, which was that "organisms are descended from one another, or several common ancestors and have diversified from this original stock", a point that Wallace talks about in his works and believed in. I think that Darwin could have developed his theory of Natural Selection without Wallace's influence, being as how they both agreed with one another on certain things, but I think that Darwin needed confirmation, per say, about what he believed and he found that in Wallace, maybe not entirely, as we can now see that Darwin tweaked bits of Wallace's work that he did not agree with. Upon publication, the book "The Origin of Species" was met with mixed reviews. The church of England was against it, while liberal Anglicans were all for it.

Stranded On A Deserted Island- Blog 1.

If I were stranded on a deserted island, the two things I would bring would be a pot and a lighter. I chose these two things for the following reasons. I would bring a pot so that I could catch water in it and boil it for drinking (being as how they say the body can survive longer without food, but not water). I would bring a lighter for the obvious reason, which is to make fire to cook and to keep warm and safe at night. I would also use the lighter to start a fire to try and catch someone's attention and in turn be rescued off the island. :) I would have said I would bring my two daughter's with me, but as much as I adore them, I wouldn't want them to suffer. God knows how long we'd be there. Besides, given that the lighter helps me get rescued, I'd be back with them in no time! :P
